Find the organisation that handles your enquiry
Cumberland Council is the starting point for local authority services in Carlisle, including information about libraries, parks, waste, roads and community support. Use the service pages to find the correct contact route. Older references to Carlisle City Council or Cumbria County Council may lead to historic information rather than the current service.
For visitor questions, the Tourist Information Centre in the Old Town Hall is a separate useful contact. It can help with exploring the city and finding current visitor information. Neither a directory listing nor an event page replaces the organisation responsible for the service you need.
Look close to home for groups and activities
Harraby Community Centre offers rooms, local activities and family facilities at the community campus on Edgehill Road. In other neighbourhoods, community centres and halls host their own programmes, so a nearby venue may be more practical than a trip into the centre. Ask the organiser about current sessions and whether booking is needed.
If you are setting up a group, ask about room size, access, equipment and hire arrangements before inviting people. A venue’s general opening hours do not mean every activity runs throughout that time. For children’s sessions, confirm the age range and whether an adult must stay.
Help young people find a suitable creative or social space
Carlisle Youth Zone on Victoria Place provides activities and a place for young people to meet and try new interests. Contact its team about membership, age groups and the session that fits. Performing arts groups such as ACT Youth Theatre and Rocket Theatre Group offer other routes into acting, singing and dance.
Music Makers runs groups for younger children and their adults at local venues. Prism Arts supports learning disabled and neurodivergent people to develop creative work. These organisations have different programmes and participation arrangements, so speak to the relevant team about the support or activity you are looking for.
Volunteer or support a local organisation
Cumbria CVS helps voluntary organisations and community groups with information, development and volunteering. It is a useful starting point if you want to contribute time or need support for a group you already run. Individual charities also publish their own opportunities, with different roles and application arrangements.
Be specific about the time you can offer, your interests and any access needs. For an event or one-off activity, contact the organiser before turning up to help. Our What’s On page covers public events, while the directory helps you find organisations whose regular work may suit a longer-term involvement.
